ARTnews Announces The UOVO Prize Winner John Edmonds

July 09, 2019

The Brooklyn Museum has awarded John Edmonds the inaugural UOVO Prize which includes a large-scale public art installation at UOVO’s forthcoming Bushwick storage facility. The Brooklyn-based photographer will also receive a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum next year. “Edmonds is best known for his stylized studio portraits of young black people and still lifes that look to challenge and upend the traditional art historical canon by centering black and queer folk.”  Edmonds details that “the public artwork with UOVO is an opportunity to examine themes central to my work, including the relationship between public and private perceptions. The way viewers encounter an image as a physical thing in time and space, instead of something reduced to the screen, has always been important to me, and I’m excited to engage with these concerns on a large scale.”
