MODA Sponsors “The World of Anna Sui
“Anna Sui is a fascinating American design success story,” according to Chris Scoates, the Museum of Arts and Design’s Nanette L. Laitman Director. Here at UOVO: MODA, we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we are sponsoring the museum’s retrospective of the fashion icon, opening September 12 in New York.
Titled “The World of Anna Sui,” this illuminating exhibition will feature 75 of the designer’s signature looks, from her groundbreaking inaugural fashion show of 1991 to her Spring 2019 collection. Her creative process is evident thru the garments, sketches, mood boards, videos of runway presentations, and cultural ephemera on view that trace Sui’s eclectic career.
Arranged thematically, the show is driven by Sui’s 13 design archetypes— Rock Star, Schoolgirl, Punk, Nomad, and Surfer, to name a few—that are infused with seemingly incongruent influences, including French interior designer and antiques dealer Madeleine Castaing, the London boutique Biba, pirates, pre-Raphaelite maidens, Yves Saint Laurent, and Minnie Mouse.
Sui is one of New York City’s most recognizable and accomplished fashion designers, known for creating contemporary original clothing inspired by in-depth research into vintage styles, cultural arcana, art history, graphic design, European and Asian decorative arts, film, and more. Sui joined New York’s creative cultural underground at a rich time in the 1970s, forging important, lasting relationships in the worlds of fashion, photography, art, music, and design.
UOVO: MODA is proud to help bring this important exhibition to New York City. A major museum fashion retrospective requires significant logistical expertise with clothing, shoes and accessories. The MODA team is providing a wide variety of critical fashion services, including garment transportation in our fleet of climate-controlled trucks, museum-quality fashion storage at one of our premier New York facilities, and expert apparel installation teams to assist with the museum displays.
UOVO Founder and Chairman Steven Guttman launched MODA as a unique storage division specifically for fashion in May 2019. In doing so, UOVO committed to protecting the legacies of remarkable fashion designers and preserving important design archives for future generations. We believe museum fashion exhibitions like “The World of Anna Sui” allow us all to learn from fashion history, enriching our cultural knowledge. UOVO: MODA is delighted to support MAD in telling Anna’s story, and in sharing her unique perspective after more than 25 years on the New York fashion scene.
